Mass concentration describes the amount of a material present in a defined final solution volume. It is a basic analytical quantity used to document standards, controls, assay inputs, and reference solutions in laboratory records.

This article covers general analytical mathematics only. It does not prescribe a preparation procedure, solvent, handling method, administration, or use outside a controlled laboratory. Qualified personnel must establish solvent compatibility, material handling, stability, and final concentration under an approved protocol and institutional SOPs.

The concentration relationship

For a solution expressed in milligrams per milliliter:

Concentration (mg/mL) = material mass (mg) ÷ final solution volume (mL)

A documented material mass of 10 mg in a final solution volume of 2 mL corresponds mathematically to 5 mg/mL. This calculation does not establish whether a particular solvent, concentration, or procedure is appropriate for a given material.

Unit conversions

  • 1 milligram (mg) = 1,000 micrograms (µg)
  • 1 milliliter (mL) = 1,000 microliters (µL)
  • 1 mg/mL = 1 µg/µL

Use consistent units throughout a worksheet and preserve sufficient significant figures for the measurement uncertainty of the equipment and reference material.

Protocol-controlled variables

A concentration calculation alone does not establish material compatibility or fitness for an assay. A laboratory protocol should independently define the solvent system, purity requirements, volumetric equipment, calibration status, environmental controls, stability window, storage conditions, and acceptance criteria.

Documentation and traceability

Record the product identity, lot or reference identifier, documented mass, final volume, calculated concentration, date, responsible analyst, equipment identifiers, and protocol version. Where available, review the product- or lot-specific Certificate of Analysis for the reported methods and results.
