Laboratory Volume Units: mL and µL Explained

Milliliters and microliters are units of liquid volume used throughout analytical laboratory work. Correct unit conversion supports traceable worksheets, equipment selection, and review of recorded measurements.

This educational article addresses laboratory volume notation only. It does not provide dosing, administration, syringe, injection, self-use, or preparation instructions.

Core volume conversions

  • 1 liter (L) = 1,000 milliliters (mL)
  • 1 milliliter (mL) = 1,000 microliters (µL)
  • 100 µL = 0.1 mL
  • 10 µL = 0.01 mL

State units alongside every value. A number without a unit is incomplete and can create a thousand-fold transcription error when mL and µL are confused.

Volume and mass are different quantities

Milliliters and microliters describe volume. Milligrams and micrograms describe mass. A solution’s concentration relates the two:

Mass concentration = material mass ÷ final solution volume

The same volume can contain different material masses when concentrations differ. Laboratory records should therefore identify both the measured volume and the documented concentration.

Selecting calibrated equipment

Qualified personnel should select calibrated volumetric equipment whose verified operating range and uncertainty are appropriate for the protocol. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions, current calibration records, and institutional SOPs. Do not infer measurement accuracy from nominal capacity alone.

Significant figures and uncertainty

Report no more precision than the reference material and measuring equipment support. Record equipment identifiers, calibration status, environmental conditions when required, observed volume, conversion performed, and the analyst responsible for the entry.
