Shelf life is a data-supported claim
A defensible shelf-life or retest period is based on stability-indicating data collected under defined conditions. General statements such as “powders last for years” or “solutions last for weeks” are not substitutes for product-specific evidence. Qualified researchers should follow the exact product label, available documentation, approved protocol, and institutional SOP.
Factors that can affect a peptide material
- Molecular sequence: different amino-acid residues have different susceptibilities to oxidation, deamidation, and other changes.
- Physical state and formulation: residual moisture, excipients, pH, and concentration can affect stability.
- Container closure: seal integrity and material compatibility can influence moisture and oxygen exposure.
- Environmental history: light, heat, humidity, and unassessed excursions may change the material.
- Analytical method: a method must be capable of detecting the change relevant to the study.
What to verify before laboratory use
Review the lot identifier, receipt date, label condition, available COA, stated storage condition, and any retest or expiration information. Confirm that the test report applies to the material in hand and that the reported method addresses the property needed for the study. Record any excursion and evaluate it under an approved deviation procedure rather than relying on a generic online timeline.
Purity and stability answer different questions
HPLC purity is a test result for the submitted sample at a defined time. It does not independently establish future shelf life. Where a purity specification applies, it is a product-specific target and not a substitute for a lot-specific result. Researchers should review the independent laboratory report for the applicable product and lot before relying on a stated purity. Stability remains governed by the label, supporting data, chain of custody, and the laboratory’s protocol.
